The year 2024 is coming to an end, but it was a wild ride in the Indian Premier League 2024. Be it the big fight between KL Rahul and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka, or Rohit Sharma being dropped from captaincy. IPL 2024 had it all. Eventually, it was Gautam Gambhir who returned to KKR as a mentor and helped the side lift the coveted trophy.
Rohit Sharma dropped from Captaincy
One of the biggest events in IPL 2024 was Rohit Sharma being dropped from the captaincy of Mumbai Indians. The MI side went on to trade Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans after IPL 2024 Retention Day. And then Hardik Pandya was announced as the new captain of the side, much to the surprise of the fans.
Indian fans didn’t take the news well. Be it on home games in Mumbai or away matches, Hardik Pandya was constantly booed by the crowd.
KL Rahul vs Sanjiv Goenka Fight
Then Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul and owner Sanjiv Goenka had a massive fight in IPL 2024. The incident took place after LSG was handed a heavy loss by Sunrisers Hyderabad. After the game, the duo were spotted having a word of words. While KL remained silent, Sanjiv Goenka was spotted in the camera having a go at his captain.
It was this incident that strained the relationship between the duo. Eventually, he was not retained on IPL 2025 Retention Day. KL Rahul went under the hammer and was bought by Delhi Capitals for a price of 14 crores.
Mahi maar raha hain
IPl 2024 gave a glimpse of what MS Dhoni used to be in his prime days. For Chennai Super Kings, Dhoni opted for a new role. He pushed himself down the order at number 7 so that Shivam Dube could come before him and bat. And the former India and CSK skipper donned a new role.
He went on to bat as a finisher and played some beautiful cameos. 28 off 9, 20 off 4, 37 off 16 show a small glimpse of what MS Dhoni used to be. While some of the games ended in losses, fans were hugely entertained to witness their hero whacking the ball out of the park.
Return of the Pant
Rishabh Pant returned to competitive action after his near-death accident. The destructive southpaw returned for Delhi Capitals on 23rd March in the clash against Punjab Kings. This was Pant’s first return to action after a span of 453 days.
While his comeback was a rad silent it was a momentous occasion both for the player and the team. Pant grew stronger and went on to be a part of the India Cricket Team. He eventually traveled to Uthe SA and went on to win the ICC T20 World Cup for the Men in Blue. But it was in the IPL that marked Pant’s return to cricket.
Runs galore by Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad was one of the most improved teams in IPL 2024. They dominated the group stage and went to the finals, only to lose to KKR on the fateful day. But during the group stage, SRH lighted up the tournament with their destructive batting. First, they set the highest score of 277 against Mumbai Indians.
A week later they broke their own record and posted 287 on the board against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. And with this, SRH went on to rewrite the pages of the history book by scoring the highest-ever team total in the IPL.
IPL’s highest successful chase
Rajasthan Royals hogged the limelight in IPL 2024 by setting up a new record. Batting first in Eden Gardens, the hosts Kolkata Knight Riders posted a mammoth total of 261/6. But the Rajasthani outfits had other plans on their mind. They came out with all guns blazing.
And eventually went on to script history by registering the highest successful run chase in IPL history. RR chased down 262/2 and imprinted their name in the pages of IPL history.
Guru Gambhir returns to KKR & gifts them title
Gautam Gambhir left his job as LSG mentor and returned back to KKR. And what a season it was for the Kolkata outfits. Previously he had won two IPL trophies with KKR a decade ago. And then on his return, it was like Midas’ touch. The Kolkata side went on to lift the trophy in Chennai.
This time as a role of a mentor, Gambhir guided and rallied his troops well to overcome all odds. Eventually, it was under Shreyas Iyer‘s captaincy that KKR lifted the trophy by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals.
